This report was published in the Journal of Housing and the Built Environment in August 2021. It presents findings from a literature review of 34 scholarly articles regarding the current strategies and approaches directed to integrate innovative technologies in the home modification process to support independent living and aging. The findings indicate that both home modification and smart technologies can support older adults’ independent living, especially with fall prevention and indoor accessibility. The fundamental requirements in smart home modification phases are customization, “minimum life interference,” and extensible technologies to cope with aging.
