This technical report from July 2021 provides information and best practices for understanding, designing, and implementing Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS). Its authors are with the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy Office and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. An EMIS can help agencies improve energy performance, reduce operational cost, and for federal staff, can serve as a valuable component of an agency’s portfolio-level energy and water metering strategy, the author highlight. EMIS functions and capabilities are discussed along with their applicability and benefits to federal agencies. These include information that can be used throughout the EMIS life cycle, ranging from system design to implementation and ongoing maintenance.
